My first 1/2 IM at Big Kahuna was a great experience. Starts with a bouyant ocean swim next to Santa Cruz Wharf. Then a scenic out and back ride along Highway 1. Some rolling hills but no real big climbs. The run is along the coast, 2 miles of which is dirt trail running. A dramatic 800 yard dash to the finish line on the beach is a fitting end to the race.

Price Paid: $300.00

Pros: fantastic course, decent support and big fun in Santa Cruz.

Cons: need to add a full IM distance by looping this current course!

Perfect. even my 14 year old daughter, Sierra did it this last time, enjoyed it and got her pumped for a full IM someday!

Pros: A beautiful, scenic course.

Cons: Has changed a bit each year.

I have done this race all four years running. It is always well-done with good support. The course is amazing with a beautiful bike ride along the cliffs of highway 1 and a run through Wilder ranch with a finish on the beach. My only small negative is that the course has had small changes each year so I haven't been able to truly compare my times each year. Fun post race atmosphere with Hawaiian music and dancers and the best part ... it finishes at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk so you can cross the finish line and jump on an amusement park ride!
